Flaunt yourself in the Traditional Dhoti Kurta

Over the ages, dhoti has been considered as the traditional wear of Indian men. Though it was a regular wear in the olden days, today you will find it restricted to only occasions and religious festivals. In Northern India, dhotis are usually paired comfortably with kurtas on top. This combination of dhoti kurta is a favourite outfit among-st the politicians. It has been the eminent costume of many national icons including Mahatma Gandhi. Not only by the politicians but this attire is also worn with a lot of dignity by the senior citizens, poets, musician, dancers, etc. So, be it a humble farmer or an elite personality the garment proves to be a common dress for everyone. In certain Rajasthani communities, wearing dhoti kurta is mandatory.
It is a single piece of rectangular unstitched cloth designed for men covering the lower part of the body from the waist. It measures about 5 yards in length. This garment is white, off-white or cream coloured. Its material is either silk or cotton. Cotton is preferred as regular wear, whereas silk is kept exclusively for special occasions.

The different styles of Dhoti Kurta

In different parts of the country, the attire dhoti is worn in different styles. In the East, the Bengali men usually wear it in the pant form by making pleats. A part of it is tucked behind that give it the look of a pant. The front part is held tightly like a Japanese fan. While in South India, men tie five knots to wrap this garment in half and tuck it in the waist so that it reaches knee length. In South, the garment comes with a thin golden border that lends it a sophisticated look.
Just like how in Northern India, dhoti kurta is a trendy combination. In Bengal people pair it with a ‘punjabi’ on top. Similarly, in the South, it is worn with ‘angavastram’ an unstitched piece of cloth worn over the shoulder or with a ‘chokka’ a shirt or at times with a ‘jubba’ a form of a kurta. But dhoti kurta is  formal wear for men in most Indian traditional occasions.
